In the video below, Fr. Robert Barron explains what the Real Presence is. The Eucharist is not simply a sign or a symbol. It is Jesus really, truly and substantially present under the Eucharistic signs of bread and wine. Jesus himself said, “I, myself am the living bread come down from heaven. Eat my flesh and drink my blood.” Jesus has ample opportunity to explain his words as metaphoric, but instead, he intensifies them saying, “My flesh is real food. My blood is real drink.” At Mass, the priest speaks in Persona Christi, with the full authority of Christ, giving his words the power to change the elements.
