Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy

vid-makeadifference-pp6__2Spiritual Works of Mercy – inner

Serving the spirit or the “inner person”

  • Instruct / teach about Father. Encourage those who doubt. “Come and see!”
  • Lovingly admonish those headed in the wrong way “Repent & believe Good News!”
  • Comfort those afflicted by sin & sorrow ”Do not be afraid!”
  • Pray for the living and the dead—as Jesus did daily
  • Bear wrongs done to us patiently—as Jesus did on Cross
  • Forgive others willingly—as Jesus did on the Cross: “Father, forgive them…”

Corporal Works of Mercy – outer

Serving the embodied person

  • Feed the hungry and give drink to thirsty
  • Clothe those who go without
  • Shelter the homeless
  • Visit the sick
  • Visit the imprisoned (even if they are there through their own guilt)
  • Bury the dead, and grieve with those who are suffering in sorrow

All are works of mercy. All are necessary. Serving others must be born of love, not of a nagging sense of obligation or to attain some sense of achievement.

We cannot help everyone, but we must help those who God’s Providence come into our lives.
